Painting in a Series - coming in 2011 My new series
Above is a famous series of paintings done by Claude Monet. He was a master of doing a "series of works". One was his "Haystacks series" These are of the Thames river in London. There was another series of a French Cathedral.
I have done work in "series" in the past and want to do another series in 2011. I haven't picked my sunject matter except that it will be landscape.
Off the top of my head I remember my "waterlilly series" (inspired by who else but Claude Monet). Then there was a series of the Shiawassee River.

Thomas Moran, Flint Institute of Arts
The Flint Institute of Arts is a premier museum in the mid-west . Below is a landscape painting by Thomas Moran , a Pastoral Landscape in their collection. So much of this piece makes me think of my Michigan.
excerpt from flintarts.org:
Thomas Moran
American, born England, 1837 – 1926
Part of the romantic tradition in late nineteenth-century landscape painting, Thomas Moran is most recognized for his idealized scenes celebrating the American West, though he depicted other areas, notably Florida and Long Island, New York. A work he showed in 1889, A Pastoral, is probably the Flint Institute of Arts' or a variant. In a review of the 1889 annual exhibition, a critic noted that "A Pastoral… possesses an undeniable scenic grandeur… Its only fault as a composition is that it is a little too perfect." Moran's paintings were largely produced from on-site sketches and completed in his studio. In A Pastoral Landscape, Moran has concentrated on the lushness of the low-lying Long Island marshland by giving a velvety quality to the paint surface

STUDIO ASSISTANT
Down to one Assistant
As some of you know one of my studio assistants, Red Dog, my 50 pound mutt, died earlier this year.
My remaining studio assistant, Sammi the beagle, has been hard at work. At the ripe age of 14, she no longer strives to eat paint, chew brushes, rip canvas, or rummage through waste paper baskets.
She has a true spirit of artist discipline and focus.
Unusual art studio "earth-sheltered" construction
This is theThomas Meyers Studio located in Hancock, NH. The studio is an innovative "earth-sheltered" construction - very unusual.
The inside is a wonderful art studio!!!!! I have never seen something like this.
Claude Monet could have been paintings in Michigan
CLAUDE MONET could have been painting in Michigan.
After viewing part of this exhibition of Monet's work, it hit me how similiar the scenery was to the state of Michigan.
The next time you see any of his work, keep that in mind.
If I could go back in time, I would have loved to invite him here to paint my beloved state. Guess I cannot say it enough..I love it here in Michigan and that is why I paint this landscape. Feeling passion about what you paint is what it is all about.

Tony Curtis was a painter too!
Most people don't know about the other side of Tony Curtis.
He was a painter...and for many years. He painted in the style of Matisse with his own abstract bent.
Fortunately his painting was something he could continue to do as he went up in years.
I always have enjoyed his bright colors. It would be nice if someone put some of his work into a book for all to see.

VINTAGE WOMAN PAINTER
BLAST FROM THE PAST
I have 2 wardrobes..one for normal wear, and one for painting. So many of my clothes have been ruined by paint. Now I have lots of painted clothes to work in.
Women have been painting for a long time. They had rough go of it trying to get recognition.
The woman in this photo MUST be posing. Her clothes have NO paint on them and she is not wearing a smock. Even with my "painting wardrobe" I still wear an apron. I do not know who she is, but the photo is a very intriguing one of a person engaged in my line of work.

WHO CAN RESIST a good looking sand dune on the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Michigan. Artists love to paint these "mysteries of sand". They twist and turn in the in the winds, a soft whoosh..or a battering blow. They have enchanted me since I was a child and I love paint them.
I am headed up (north) to Sturgeon Bay and Harbor Springs, Michigan with friends for a few days. BUT..you say "who goes to the beach in cooler weather?" I do, and so do a lot of other "cool weather" lovers. Michigan is just too beautiful in every season to not be out there IN it. And then bring home more paintings ideas.
WHEN THE GREAT LAKES FREEZE it helps prevent evaporation, a protective measure. These huge bodies of fresh water support our vibrant sport fishing, commercial fishing , water sports, boating, and other tourist venues. We are blessed to have so much water around us in Michigan.
WHO CAN RESIST this beautiful state of Michigan! COME ONE, COME ALL..AND ENJOY!!
